Calculate Rf values

Key ideas1 of 3

Use a ratio

Rf compares the distance moved by a substance with the distance moved by the solvent front. Measure both from the same baseline. Use the spot’s centre.

Rf is substance travel distance divided by solvent-front travel distance. Both start at the baseline; use the spot centre and matching distance units. Rf has no unit.
