Choose positions without bias
To estimate the population of a common plant, mark out the study area and place two tape measures at right angles. Generate pairs of random coordinates and place the quadrat at those positions. Random sampling reduces bias from choosing places with many or few plants. Do not simply throw the quadrat or choose the easiest places.
