Key ideas1 of 3

Mean, median and mode

The five quadrat counts are 2, 4, 4, 6 and 9. The mean is the total divided by the number of samples: 25 ÷ 5 = 5 plants per quadrat. The median is the middle value after sorting: 4. The mode is the most frequent value: 4. Include zero counts when they are valid samples.

Five 1 square metre quadrats have target-plant counts 2, 4, 4, 6 and 9. Total field area is 200 square metres.
