Higher: estimating braking forces

Key ideas1 of 3

Calculate the change in velocity

For a 1000 kg car slowing uniformly from 20 m/s to rest in 5 s, take forwards as positive. Acceleration = (0 − 20) / 5 = −4 m/s². The negative sign shows acceleration opposite to the initial motion. In this example it is deceleration. State that the acceleration is assumed constant.

Car mass 1000 kilograms brakes from 20 to 0 metres per second in 5 seconds over 50 metres, with constant deceleration.
