Lesson 1.13 · AQA Combined Science

Group 0
Noble gases

Full outer shells. Very little reaction.

01 · Full outer shells

Meet the noble gases

Group 0 is on the far right. It includes helium, neon and argon. They are colourless gases at room temperature.

Their atoms have full outer shells, making them stable and very unreactive. Helium has 2 outer electrons; the others have 8.

02 · Single atoms

They do not normally form molecules

Noble gases exist as single atoms. The word for this is monatomic.

03 · Useful properties

Where do we use them?

Helium balloonsHelium is less dense than air and does not burn.
Neon lightingNeon glows orange-red when electricity passes through it.
04 · A trend down the group

Boiling points increase

As relative atomic mass increases down Group 0, boiling point increases. All still have low boiling points.

GasBoiling point (rounded)
Helium−269°C
Neon−246°C
Argon−186°C

Remember: −186°C is warmer than −269°C.

Remember

Full outer shells; single atoms; boiling points increase down the group.
