Contraception: methods and evidence

Key ideas1 of 3

Hormonal methods

Contraception reduces the chance of pregnancy. Oral contraceptives contain hormones that inhibit FSH so eggs do not mature. Hormonal methods include pills, patches, implants and injections. Slow-release progesterone-like hormones, called progestogens, can inhibit egg maturation or release. Duration and hormone combinations vary between methods.

A condom prevents sperm meeting an egg. A hormonal pill can inhibit egg maturation or release. An intrauterine device is positioned inside the uterus.
