Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes

Key ideas1 of 3

Type 1: too little insulin

In Type 1 diabetes, the pancreas fails to produce sufficient insulin. Without enough insulin, blood glucose can remain too high. It is normally treated with insulin injections, with blood glucose monitoring to guide management.

In Type 1 diabetes the pancreas produces little or no insulin. In Type 2 diabetes insulin is present but target cells respond poorly. In both, glucose uptake is reduced.
