The nervous system

A fast communication system

Receptors detect changes such as light, sound or pressure. Information travels along specialised cells called neurones as electrical impulses. The nervous system coordinates our behaviour and responses to our surroundings.

The brain and spinal cord form the central nervous system. A blue sensory pathway travels towards the spinal cord; an orange motor pathway travels away to muscle.
