Required practical 6: reaction time

Key ideas1 of 3

The ruler-drop method

Hold a ruler vertically with 0 cm level with the top of the catcher’s thumb and finger. Leave a small gap. Release it without warning; the catcher closes their fingers. Record the distance fallen. A shorter distance indicates a shorter reaction time. Use an appropriate conversion table if time in seconds is required.

A ruler starts with its zero centimetre mark level between the fingertips. After falling vertically, the ruler is caught at the 16 centimetre mark.
