Alleles, genotype and phenotype

Different versions of a gene

An allele is a version of a gene. In this simple diploid model, an individual has two alleles for a gene, one from each parent. Write a dominant allele with a capital letter, for example A, and the recessive allele with the matching lower-case letter, a.

Homologous chromosomes have A and a at the same gene position; allele combinations AA, Aa and aa illustrate homozygous and heterozygous genotypes.
