Classification organises organisms using shared features and evidence about relationships. Linnaeus's system has seven main levels, from broadest to narrowest: kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species.
A scientific name has two parts: the genus name followed by the specific name; together they identify the species. The genus starts with a capital letter and the second part is lower case. For a lion, Panthera leo identifies genus Panthera and species Panthera leo. Scientific names help people refer to the same species across languages.
