Introduce a useful gene
Genetic engineering changes an organism's genetic material by introducing a gene from another organism to give a desired characteristic. A gene carries information that can be used to make a protein.
For example, a human insulin gene can be introduced into bacteria. The genetically engineered bacteria can then make human insulin, which is collected and purified for use as a medicine. In the overview, G is the introduced gene, B is the bacterial cell and P is the protein produced. Research also explores genetic engineering to treat inherited disorders.
