Sexual and asexual reproduction

Key ideas1 of 3

Two gametes join

Sexual reproduction involves the fusion of male and female gametes. In animals these are sperm and egg cells. In flowering plants the male gamete is carried in pollen and joins an egg cell. Combining genetic information from two gametes produces variation in the offspring.

Two animal gametes fuse to produce varied offspring; a single cell divides by mitosis to produce clones.
