Higher: electric motors

Key ideas1 of 3

Opposite forces turn a coil

Higher Tier: an electric motor uses the motor effect to transfer energy electrically into kinetic energy. A current-carrying coil in a magnetic field experiences forces on its opposite sides. This end view looks along the axle; it is not a complete circuit diagram. The field points right. Current comes out of the page in the left conductor A and goes into the page in the right conductor B. Fleming’s left-hand rule gives an upward force on A and a downward force on B. These forces act on opposite sides of the axle, producing clockwise rotation.

Higher: end view of a coil with conductor A on the left and B on the right. Opposite forces turn the coil clockwise.
