Set up a compass investigation
Place a bar magnet on paper and draw around it so its position can be kept fixed. Label its poles. Put a small plotting compass beside the magnet and allow the needle to settle. A compass shows field direction. Iron filings can help reveal a pattern, but they do not on their own show which way the field points. Keep other magnets, steel objects and current-carrying wires away from the investigation.
