Physics Paper 1 · P4 · Lesson 4.9

Irradiation and contamination

Is radiation reaching an object, or has radioactive material got onto it?

Key ideas1 of 3

Irradiation: radiation reaches the object

Irradiation means exposing an object to nuclear radiation. Radioactive material is not transferred onto the object just because it is irradiated. In the situations studied here, the object does not become radioactive.

Radiation travels from an external source to an object; no source material is transferred.

The rays travel from the source to the object.
