Treating wastewater

Remove large material, then settle

Domestic sewage, agricultural waste and industrial effluent may contain organic matter, microbes or chemicals. Screening and grit removal remove large objects and grit. Sedimentation lets suspended solids settle into sludge; the liquid above is effluent.

Waste water is screened then sedimented. Settled sludge goes to anaerobic digestion while liquid effluent goes to aerobic treatment with air.
