Growth towards or away
Plants use hormones to coordinate growth. A tropism is a directional growth response to a stimulus. Phototropism is a response to light, and gravitropism is a response to gravity. Positive means growth towards the stimulus; negative means growth away from it. These terms describe direction, not whether a response is good or bad for the plant.
