Adult cell cloning

Key ideas1 of 3

Move a nucleus, not a chromosome

Adult cell cloning begins with an unfertilised egg cell whose nucleus is removed. A nucleus from an adult body cell, such as a skin cell, is then inserted into the egg cell. The transferred nucleus contains the adult donor's full set of nuclear genetic information. It is not a single chromosome or a sperm nucleus. The egg provides the cell contents needed to support the earliest stages of development.

The whole nucleus from an adult body cell is moved into an egg without its own nucleus. Electrical stimulation followed by cell division produces an embryo.
