DNA: the repeating units

Key ideas1 of 3

A polymer of nucleotides

DNA is a very long molecule built from smaller repeating units called nucleotides. Each nucleotide contains a sugar, a phosphate group and one base attached to the sugar. DNA has four different bases, abbreviated A, C, G and T, so there are four different kinds of DNA nucleotide. The sugar and phosphate components are shared; it is the base that distinguishes one kind of nucleotide from another.

A phosphate group links to a sugar, and a base attaches to the sugar; together they form one nucleotide.
