Patterns in plant breeding
In the mid-nineteenth century, Gregor Mendel used plant-breeding experiments to investigate inheritance. He recorded characteristics over generations and found patterns that could be explained by separate inherited units. These units passed to descendants without being permanently blended together. A characteristic that disappeared from one generation could reappear later. The important contribution was an evidence-based explanation of inheritance using units, not knowledge of the molecular structure of DNA.
