Choosing a reproductive strategy

Key ideas1 of 3

A rapid way to multiply

A single individual can reproduce asexually without finding a mate or bringing gametes together. This saves time and energy and can produce many offspring quickly when resources are plentiful. The offspring are clones, with the same genetic information as the parent apart from any new mutations. A successful combination of inherited features is therefore preserved, which can be useful in a stable environment.

Comparison of the features of sexual and asexual reproduction.
