Grow microorganisms as food
Biotechnology can grow microorganisms in large quantities to help provide food. The fungus Fusarium is used to make mycoprotein, a protein-rich food suitable for vegetarians. It grows using glucose syrup under aerobic conditions, so oxygen must be supplied. The fungal biomass is harvested and purified for food production. The food is made from the microorganism biomass; mycoprotein is not meat grown on an animal farm.
