Higher: environmental change and distribution

Key ideas1 of 3

Distribution changes with conditions

Distribution describes where a species occurs, not just how many individuals exist in total. Temperature and water availability affect whether organisms can survive and reproduce in different places. Changes may be seasonal, vary between geographical regions, or follow human activity. A species may become less common in one area and more common in another as conditions change. Evaluate actual survey information rather than assuming every species benefits from warming.

Equal-effort illustrative surveys: south temperature 18 then 20 C, counts 8 then 2; central 15 then 17 C, counts 30 then 20; north 12 then 14 C, counts 5 then 24. Other environmental factors were not measured.
