Corrosion: conditions and protection

Key ideas1 of 3

Finding the conditions for rusting

Corrosion is damage caused by chemical reactions between a material and its surroundings. Rusting is the corrosion of iron and needs both water and oxygen from air. Compare identical clean nails over the same time: ordinary water with air, dry air with a drying agent, and boiled water beneath oil. Boiling removes dissolved air; oil prevents air returning. Only the first arrangement supplies both requirements.

Three labelled tubes containing nails under different water and air conditions.
