The Haber process: making and separating ammonia

Key ideas1 of 3

Supplying nitrogen and hydrogen

The Haber process manufactures ammonia for products including nitrogen fertilisers. Nitrogen is obtained from air, while hydrogen is commonly made from natural gas. The gases are purified before use. They are supplied in a nitrogen-to-hydrogen ratio of 1:3, matching the balanced equation N2 + 3H2 ⇌ 2NH3. The equation conserves two nitrogen atoms and six hydrogen atoms on each side.

Molecule models and a reversible equation show nitrogen, hydrogen and ammonia.
