Measuring a neutralisation in the laboratory
An ammonium salt can be prepared by reacting aqueous ammonia with the appropriate dilute acid. Because both solutions are soluble, excess reactant cannot simply be filtered away. A school-supervised titration uses an indicator to find the volumes needed for neutralisation. For ammonium sulfate, use sulfuric acid. Measure a fixed volume of ammonia solution, add acid carefully and record the endpoint; eye protection is needed when handling these solutions.
