A reactive carbon–carbon bond
An alkene is a hydrocarbon containing a carbon–carbon double bond, written C=C. Hydrocarbons contain carbon and hydrogen only. The double bond is the alkene functional group: the part responsible for its characteristic reactions. Each carbon forms four covalent bonds in total, counting a double bond as two. A displayed formula shows every atom and every bond, including bonds to hydrogen.
