From monomer to repeating unit and back

Key ideas1 of 3

Drawing a repeating unit

Start with the alkene’s two double-bonded carbons. Change their double bond to a single bond, retain each attached atom or group, and draw a continuing bond from each backbone carbon. Add brackets and n. For propene, one carbon carries two hydrogen atoms; the other carries hydrogen and CH3. That CH3 remains a side group rather than becoming an extra backbone atom in the repeat.

A substituted alkene and a bracketed repeating unit labelled P and Q.
