From the flame to a line spectrum
Flame emission spectroscopy analyses metal ions in solution. The sample is introduced into a flame and the light emitted passes through a spectroscope. Its output separates the light into a line spectrum. Different metal ions give characteristic sets of lines. Compare the positions of the sample lines with reference spectra, using the same wavelength scale, to identify which metal ions are supported by the evidence.
