Identify metal ions with flame tests

Key ideas1 of 3

Five characteristic colours

A flame test can help identify the metal ion in an ionic compound. The required colours are lithium: crimson; sodium: yellow; potassium: lilac; calcium: orange-red; copper: green. Learn the written colour names as well as the illustrations, because screens reproduce colours differently. The observation identifies a possible metal ion; it does not, by itself, identify the negative ion or the complete compound.
