Hydrogen fuel cells

Key ideas1 of 4

Keep supplying the reactants

A fuel cell is supplied continuously with hydrogen and oxygen or air. Chemical reactions produce a potential difference. It keeps operating while reactants are supplied, unlike a sealed cell with a limited store.

Simplified acidic fuel cell: hydrogen at the negative electrode, oxygen at the positive electrode, electrons through the external load, hydrogen ions through the electrolyte, water leaving.
