Electric fields around charged objects

Key ideas1 of 3

A field describes a possible force

A charged object creates an electric field around it. Another charged object placed in that region experiences an electrostatic force. Field lines are a model for the field, not physical threads. Their arrows show the direction of the force on a small positive test charge. A negative test charge experiences a force in the opposite direction to those field arrows.

Two isolated spheres with radial electric-field lines and arrows, labelled A and B.
