Using and testing the pressure–volume equation

Key ideas1 of 3

Compare two states of one gas sample

Because the pressure–volume product stays constant, two states can be compared using p₁V₁ = p₂V₂. To find a final pressure, divide the original pressure–volume product by the new volume. For example, 100 kPa × 60 cm³ divided by 40 cm³ gives 150 kPa. Keep pressure units consistent and volume units consistent throughout; convert to pascals and cubic metres when those units are required.

A two-state data table with the final pressure left unknown.
