A moving piston transfers energy
Pushing a piston into an enclosed gas requires a force acting through a distance. Work is done on the gas, transferring energy to its internal energy store. The particles can gain kinetic energy, so the gas temperature can increase. The direction of energy transfer matters: this is energy supplied by mechanical work, even when no heater is present and no initial heating from the surroundings occurs.
