Small nuclei combine
Nuclear fusion occurs when two light atomic nuclei join to form a heavier nucleus. Fusion is the process that releases energy in stars. It differs from fission, which splits a large nucleus. The new nucleus contains nuclear particles from the starting nuclei; fusion is not simply two neutral atoms sticking together through a chemical bond. Extremely high temperatures allow nuclei to approach closely enough for fusion to occur.
