Higher: radiation and Earth’s temperature

Key ideas1 of 3

Incoming, reflected and emitted

Earth receives radiation from the Sun. Some is reflected by clouds, the atmosphere and the surface, so it is not absorbed by Earth’s system. The rest transfers energy to the surface and atmosphere. Earth emits infrared radiation to space. For a steady global mean temperature, the absorbed incoming power and outgoing power must balance over time, allowing for energy stored within the system.

Incoming solar, reflected and outgoing infrared paths cross an Earth–atmosphere boundary.
