Calculating and measuring magnification

Key ideas1 of 3

Compare image and object heights

Magnification = image height ÷ object height. It is a ratio with no units because the height units cancel. Both heights must be expressed in the same unit before dividing. A 6 cm image of a 2 cm object has magnification 3. For these GCSE calculations use the sizes of the heights; the ray diagram separately identifies whether the image is upright or inverted.

Object height 2 cm and image height 6 cm are shown in a height comparison.
