Higher: why waves suit their uses

Key ideas1 of 3

Link a property to the job

Higher Tier: link a relevant property to the application. Radio waves carry changing signals through air over long distances, enabling broadcasting. Microwaves used for satellite links pass through the atmosphere, allowing communication between Earth and space. In cooking, food absorbs microwave energy and heats up. Infrared is also absorbed by objects and heats them, making it useful in heaters and cooking. Infrared cameras detect differences in the infrared arriving from a scene to form images that can indicate temperature differences. A useful explanation names the interaction and connects it to the purpose.

Microwaves pass through the atmosphere, infrared heats absorbing surfaces, and visible light is guided along optical fibres.
