Investigating infrared radiation

Key ideas1 of 3

Compare infrared emission

All objects emit infrared radiation. To compare surfaces fairly, fill a Leslie cube with hot water and use an infrared detector to measure radiation from each face. Compare a matt black face with a shiny metal face. Keep the faces at the same temperature and use the same detector distance and angle each time. Measure one face at a time and repeat readings. At the same temperature, matt black is a better emitter than shiny metal. Take readings promptly, or monitor temperature, because the water cools during the investigation. Handle hot water and the cube carefully to avoid burns.

A hot-water Leslie cube is measured one face at a time using the same infrared detector at equal distance and angle.
