Required practical 20: waves in a solid

Key ideas1 of 3

Use a vibrating string

Connect a vibration generator to a signal generator and stretch a string over a pulley with a hanging mass to provide tension. Adjust frequency to form a clear stationary pattern. The solid string supports transverse waves. A stationary pattern has fixed nodes, where movement is smallest, and loops between them. The pattern does not travel along the string; it is used to measure the wavelength of the waves travelling along it. Secure the apparatus and keep clear of the moving string and falling masses.

A stretched string connects vibration generator A to a pulley and hanging mass C. Signal generator B supplies 50 hertz. Two stationary-wave loops span 0.60 metres, with a ruler beneath.
