Predator–prey cycles

Key ideas1 of 3

Prey rise before predators

More prey means more available food for predators. More predators can survive and reproduce, so their population may increase after a time delay. In a simple stable system, prey and predator numbers can rise and fall in repeated cycles.

Start with both populations at year 0.
