Waste and pollution

Key ideas1 of 3

More demand, more waste

A growing human population needs more materials, food, water and energy. Higher standards of living can also increase the resources used per person. Together, these changes can create more waste. Waste and chemicals must be handled properly to limit pollution. Pollution can harm or kill organisms. If species disappear from an area, its biodiversity falls. Reducing unnecessary resource use and managing waste carefully can limit these effects.

Water, air and land pollution sources, including sewage, fertiliser, smoke, acidic gases, landfill and toxic chemicals.
