Acceleration changes velocity
Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity. Its unit is metres per second squared (m/s²). An acceleration of 2 m/s² means velocity changes by 2 m/s each second. In the example, the object moves right and its velocity increases from 2 m/s to 10 m/s in 4 s. Its change in velocity is 10 − 2 = 8 m/s. A change in direction also changes velocity.
