Uniform acceleration calculations

Key ideas1 of 3

An equation without time

For constant acceleration, use v² − u² = 2as. Here v is final velocity in m/s, u is initial velocity in m/s, a is acceleration in m/s² and s is distance in metres for the straight-line journey considered here. The equation is useful when time is not given. In the example, an object starts from rest, so u = 0 m/s, reaches v = 10 m/s and has constant acceleration a = 2 m/s².

A cart starts at rest, reaches 10 metres per second with acceleration 2 metres per second squared. Distance s is unknown.
