Higher: interactions of menstrual hormones

Key ideas1 of 3

From FSH to the LH surge

The pituitary releases FSH, stimulating egg maturation and oestrogen secretion by the ovary. Oestrogen rebuilds the uterus lining and inhibits FSH. A high oestrogen level helps stimulate the LH surge, which triggers ovulation.

FSH stimulates follicle maturation and oestrogen production. Oestrogen inhibits FSH and promotes the LH surge, which causes egg release. Progesterone maintains the uterine lining and inhibits both FSH and LH.
