Biology Paper 1 · B3 · Lesson 3.4

Plant diseases: TMV and rose black spot

Recognise the signs and explain why infected plants grow less.

Key ideas1 of 3

Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV)

TMV infects plants, including tobacco and tomatoes. It causes a mottled mosaic pattern on leaves. Less healthy green tissue means less photosynthesis, so less sugar is made for growth.

Scientific leaf schematics comparing healthy green tissue with patchy pale and dark green mosaic discolouration; not photographs.

A simplified leaf diagram showing mottled colour, not a photograph.
