People choose the parents
In selective breeding, people choose organisms with inherited characteristics they want and breed them together. Examples include disease resistance in crops, more useful food production, a gentle temperament in animals, and particular flower colours.
Breeders need variation to choose from. In the plant model, they choose tall parent plants. Their offspring still vary, so breeders select suitable offspring to become the next parents.
