Higher: calculating motor-effect force

Key ideas1 of 3

Calculate force with F = BIl

Higher Tier: for a straight conductor carrying current at right angles to a magnetic field, calculate the force using F = BIl. F is force in newtons (N), B is magnetic flux density in tesla (T), I is current in amperes (A), and l is the length of conductor in the magnetic field in metres (m). In the example, F = 0.20 × 3.0 × 0.50 = 0.30 N. Only the active length inside the field is included. The extra wire outside the field does not add to l.

Higher: a wire carries 3.0 amperes perpendicular to a 0.20 tesla field. The active length inside the field is 0.50 metres; grey sections are outside it. The force is unknown.
