Higher: explaining temperature responses

Key ideas1 of 3

Sweat must evaporate

Evaporation of sweat transfers energy from the skin to the surroundings, helping cool the body. Merely producing liquid sweat is not enough to guarantee rapid cooling: evaporation matters. Moving air can speed evaporation by carrying humid air away from the skin. Very humid air reduces evaporation because the surrounding air already contains much water vapour, so sweating may cool less effectively.

Trials P, Q and R have different air movement and humidity; evaporation rates are given.
